"How do I find out where everything is?"

During your vacation in Cairns, you will most likely go on a tour to The Great Barrier Reef, visit Kuranda in the Rainforest and wander through the shopping areas and markets.

Royal Flying Doctor Visitors Centre

This important medical service was started by Reverend John Flynn in 1928.
With the assistance of Alf Traeger, inventor of the pedal radio, medical attention to the remote areas of Australia became a reality.

The Cairns Visitors Center opened at Edge Hill on 1st July 1972.
During the short break at the Visitors Centre a 15 minute film, “A Day in the Life of the Flying Doctor”, will be shown.
There will also be an informative talk about the history and daily operations of the service and the famous pedal radio.
The museum contains a considerable collection of historical and modern photographs and memorabilia showing the development of the service since 1928.
On display is a Queenair aircraft once used by the service.

Please note that the Royal Flying Doctor Service Visitor Centre is NOT open on Sundays and Public Holidays. Our drivers are locals and will visit other points of interest.

Flecker Botanic Gardens

In 1888, Eugene Fitzalan, a botanical collector established a nursery near the present site of the Botanic Gardens and opened his gardens to the public.

In 1971 the Cairns City Council named Flecker Botanic Gardens, in honour of Dr. Hugo Flecker, the founder of the North Queensland Naturalist Club and Flecker Herbarium.

The gardens consist of a collection of tropical rainforest plants of both Australian native and exotic origins. Among the attractions are a Fernery, Orchid House, Aboriginal Plant Use Section, as well as Palms, Heliconia, Ginger, Bamboo, Tropical fruits, and flowering trees, shrubs and vines.
